Boric acid is also called "positive boric acid".It is made by the reaction of natural borax (sodium borate) with acid.The chemical formula is H3BO3.Molecular weight 61.83.
White triclinic axial plane scales with glossy crystals.The relative density is 1.43514, and the refractive index is 1.337, 1.461 and 1.462.Soluble in water, ethanol and glycerin.
The aqueous solution is acidic and is a weak monoacid (Ka=6×10-10).In water solubility increases with increasing temperature.Heated to 169?(±1?) dehydration to metaboric acid, 300? to boric anhydride.Metaborate is obtained by neutralization with a strong base.
Tetraborate was obtained under weak alkaline conditions.
Preparation method: can be added to borax solution with hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, or by hydrochloric acid separation of square boron stone.
Application: widely used in the production of borate, sodium silicate, borate ester, optical glass, enamels, paints, pigments, cosmetics, food preservatives, leather finishing, printing and dyeing auxiliaries and medicine, also can be used as antiseptic disinfectant, astringent.
